Blessed are the Moms

As you probably know by now, I love two things with all of my heart, followed by a whole bunch of other things that come in a very distant third. First and second on my list are God and my beautiful, wonderful wife, Renee. Tied for third is pretty much everything else. Among the top contenders for that prestigious third-place ranking is history – especially when you combine fascinating historical accounts found in the ancient, proven, and incredibly accurate books of the Bible.
Mother’s Day is just around the corner and I felt a deep stirring in my soul (and if you follow Jesus, you can read that as being Holy Spirit-guided) to offer some heartfelt encouragement to all the moms and to those of us who have been blessed by their nurturing care.
Bible Moms Rock
Let me set the table for you. If you hang around Christians long enough, you’ll regularly hear the names of legendary figures like Paul, Noah, Moses, Daniel, Samuel, Jacob, Isaac, Samson, and a whole bunch of other notable dudes. Their stories are exceptionally rich and have a deep historical connection to our present day and our collective future. However, you don’t hear quite as much about the remarkable women in the Bible. Oh sure, you’ll hear that Eve is the mother of all mankind. You’ll also hear about the courageous Esther and the King, Naomi’s mentoring of Ruth, and Sarah’s journey with Abraham. But even in those epic stories, the beautiful and faithful details of mommy-hood are often missed.
Today, I want to offer some real-world, practical encouragement for moms that comes straight from the timeless pages of the Bible.
Blessed are Moms Who Experience Loss
Perhaps you’re a mother who has recently experienced a devastating loss. Maybe you’ve lost a spouse, a close sister, or even a precious child. A devoted family woman named Naomi experienced a similar, crushing grief. She lost her husband and both of her sons, and in her deep sorrow, she felt like giving up. Yet, her daughter-in-law, also grieving, stayed faithfully by her side.
Naomi’s gift of motherhood eventually morphed into a powerful season of mentoring Ruth. In the midst of her pain, Naomi couldn’t possibly see how God was using her to continue the very bloodline of Jesus. The Bible says that it was Naomi’s guidance that led Ruth to marry Boaz and then she gave birth to Obed which carried on the lineage of our future Savior. And here’s another head-turner: Boaz’s mother, Rahab, had been a prostitute! God used her circumstances, in one of the greatest turnarounds in history, to sow into the generations leading to the birth of Christ.
If you feel lost in sadness like Naomi, look up. God is working through you and the people He has placed alongside you.
Blessed are the Moms in Transition
You’ve been waiting a long, weary time for a sense of purpose. Maybe that long wait has caused you to become skeptical of people or even a bit bitter toward the future, teeter-tottering between feelings of failing fate or divine destiny. If so, you are a lot like Isaac’s mother, Sarah.
God made a promise to Sarah that seemed impossible. When Sarah laughed at God’s promise, did she have any idea that her motherhood would determine the course of billions of lives? Could she even fathom a number that high?
God sees you, even in your quiet waiting. Similar to Sarah, He has made a great promise to you for your life. He sees you in your skepticism and your bitterness. He is fully capable of turning that bitterness into joyful laughter if you’ll simply let Him in.
Blessed are the Moms with Child Challenges
The agony of a child’s suffering. Maybe you’re the mom whose son or daughter is caught in the iron-clad grip of addiction. Your circle of friends and advisors might be telling you to “let go and let God” but you’re understandably frightened by the potential worst possible outcomes.
Your story of God’s radical faithfulness is found in the second book of the Bible. Look for Jochebed. She had to lift her hands from a tar-soaked basket and watch her first-born son drift down a dangerous river toward an unknown future. She had no clue that God would honor her terrifying act of trust by using her son, Moses, to free the Jews from slavery and introduce the world to the omniscient God.
Pray to Him, ask Him for the next step, and trust what He says. He loves you and your child more than you can imagine.
Blessed are the Moms Who Make Mistakes
Is it you in the middle of a messy, painful scandal? Maybe you did something that you think is unforgivable and the consequences of your actions have hit the fan. It might feel like the entire world is looking at you with a judgmental “how-could-you” gaze. Rest assured, there is a mother’s story in the Bible just for you. A story to let you know that God still sees and loves you.
The mother of the wisest king in history was caught up in one of the world’s most famous scandals. In the thick of loathsome circumstances, Bathsheba had no idea God would use her story to encourage you thousands of years later. She had an affair of biblical proportions (cause it is in the bible) with a King named David. She became pregnant, gave birth, but the baby died. She then married David, got pregnant again and gave birth to a boy who would become King Solomon.
In the middle of your current mess, Jesus can still work wonders if you invite Him in.
Blessed are the Moms of the Different
And what if you’re actually doing okay, but your kid is just a little... different? Or maybe even a lot different. That’s okay, too! God sees you clearly. Your biblical “mom-alike” is Elizabeth, whose son wore camel hair and ate locusts. That was definitely different enough to get a mention in the Bible!
Elizabeth was used by God to give birth to John the Baptist, the one who paved the way for Jesus. Be encouraged: Elizabeth absorbed the uniqueness of her son and embraced his divine calling.
You can breathe easier by taking a fresh look at your own child. Put God at the center of your vision and try to see your child through His loving eyes.
Blessed are The Moms Who Are Consistent
Maybe you’re actually in a great place. Life is ticking along smoothly; the children are fine, your husband is fine, your career is fine, and your finances are stable. You go to church on Sundays and Wednesdays, and everything is just... fine.
You’re like Eunice. Everything was fine for her, too. Eunice was a super-strong believer with a steady life. But one day her son, Timothy, met the apostle Paul. At that moment everything changed. Her years of loving, teaching, nurturing, and steady hand made her son far more than just “fine”. He became so influential that he earned a special place in Paul’s heart and two entire books of the Bible named after him. Keep going, everything is fine!
Blessed are the Moms Who are Baron
What if you’re single or not a mother? Maybe you’re unable to have children, or perhaps God hasn’t called you to that path. There are stories for you, too!
Sometimes a “mothering gift” flows from a different passion. Look at Deborah. She loved justice and was a natural leader. God honored her bold faith by making her a powerful judge and prophetess who united Israel during a catastrophic crisis.
Be encouraged! God has a unique purpose for you. Pray, ask, and watch what happens. For her impact, Deborah was known as a “Mother in Israel”
Blessed are the Moms Who Are Unseen
Were you voted “most likely to go unnoticed” in high school? Even the things you do now in your life might not seem to amount to more than a “hill of beans.” You have great biblical company among the “unknowns.”
Just because your name isn’t in the headlines doesn’t mean God isn’t using you. The mothers of Samson and Sisera aren’t even named in the Bible even though their efforts were well-documented. Heck, even the wife of Noah is nameless!. You’d think she’d get an entire book after that journey!
Nonetheless, God used these nameless women to do incredible things through their children. He can certainly do that for you, too.
Blessed are the Moms
I’ve only scratched the surface of how God honors moms and their sacred calling of raising humans for His purpose, glory, and joy. In turn, you receive the fulfillment, the glow, and the beautiful opportunity to rejoice, just as all of us sons and daughters rejoice in you.
Happy Mother’s Day!
