Four Corners Prayer

When Temecula Mayor Jessica Alexander, Pastor Monty Sharp, and the other organizers of the Four Corners Prayer Movement say that the victory for Temecula, Murrieta, Menifee, Lake Elsinore and our other surrounding cities is ours to claim, I believe it.

Yes, there is a city-wide prayer coming up on September 27th at Ronald Reagan Sports Park at 4pm.


Why Pray?

But first, what could prayer possibly do for a community or a movement? If you're a regular here, you know that I love history and there are great stories about times when prayers played an important role in our country’s history. 


Prayer works

In the Bible, one verse of many about prayer, says “The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working” (James 5:16). And recorded history reveals just how powerful prayer can be when His children humble themselves and yield to His sovereignty and providence.


For example, just before the American Revolution, a dramatic story unfolded around the French Navy’s plan to violently conquer New England and more. The year was 1746 and 70 ships with 13,000 men were sitting off the shores of our great land. In hearing about the imminent threat, Massachusetts Governor William Shirley called for a “day of prayer and fasting.” 


In response, the Reverend Thomas Prince prayed “Send Thy tempest, Lord, upon the water…scatter the ships of our tormentors!” History records that a massive storm came with winds strong enough to ring the church bells. It was a hurricane that sank the French fleet and killed over 2000 troops.


In August of 1776 the Continental Army was trapped, cornered and woefully outnumbered. It was prayer, as many believe, that caused God to send a sudden fog that was thick enough to conceal the escape of 9000 troops. It was also a turning point for the fighters to keep hope in the future. 


A famous prayer that also helped shape America was Benjamin Franklin’s urging for prayer at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia which was credited for breaking the delegation's stalemate and leading to the consensus on the framework of the United States Constitution. Can I get an Amen? 


Four Corners Prayer Temecula Valley

So when Temecula Mayor Jessica Alexander, Pastor Monty Sharp, and the other organizers of the Four Corners Prayer Movement say that the victory for Temecula, Murrieta, Menifee, Lake Elsinore and our other surrounding cities is ours to claim, I believe it. Victory over broken relationships. Victory over divisiveness. Victory over evil influencers. Victory over economic circumstances. Victory over the deceitful. Victory over the deranged, Victory over the depraved. Victory over destruction. Victory in Jesus Christ through His love, forgiveness, truth, freedom and power.


Jesus said, “For where two or three gather together as my followers, I am there among them.” (Matthew 18:20). And that is exactly the expectation every 4th Sunday at 4pm in Ronald Reagan Sport Park as we all gather together to pray. Eventually, the organizers of the Four Corners Prayer Movement will grow the 4th Sunday prayer into four locations (one in a different community) every 4th Sunday. 


Four Corners Prayer Pillars

Continuing the theme of fours, the Four Corners Prayer Movement gathering(s) will focus on four pillars of intercession. 


  • His Purpose: Asking Jesus to reveal how we, as communities and individuals, matter to His mission.

  • His Power: Just as the Lord told Zerubbabel that victory would not come by his own strength or by military might but through the power of the Spirit of God (Zech 4:6) and following the Jesus’ example at Gethsemane; not by our will but by the will of Father God.

  • His Provision: The supply lines to win this spiritual battle will humbly be handed over to Jesus for fulfillment. 

  • His Protection: According to the website (fourcornersprayer.org), the ultimate purpose of the Four Corners Prayer Movement is to rebuild the walls of redemption and gates of protection that Jesus may again reign in preeminence over our communities and within our lives.


Going The Distance

For the planners (like me) who desire to know all the details in advance before deciding to attend, the ultimate question is just how long is this prayer every 4th Sunday at four locations in our communities going to last? 


That question is left up to God. It may well last a very long time depending on the commitment of the community to humble themselves before the Lord. 


It is entirely possible that The Four Corners Prayer Movement could  end up like the Moravian community of Herrnhut in Saxony, Germany. In 1727, that community began a round-the-clock prayer watch. Through that constant prayer the community was nudged by God toward spreading the good news of Jesus Christ. One person at a time, each taking an hour of prayer, managed to pray without ceasing for 100 years! Over 300 missionaries were dispatched all over the world to tell others about Jesus. Historical records show the dissent and deterioration plaguing that small community disappeared almost at the very beginning of those 100 years. 


Time Four Action

On the 27th of this month (and every fourth Sunday of each month after), whether the time spent praying is four seconds, four minutes, four hours, four weeks, or four decades, let God decide. 


And now, I pray you will set aside the time to become the prayer warrior God has created all of us to be and join the Four Corners Prayer Movement on Sunday, September 27th at 4pm at Ronald Reagan Sports Park.
